One of the most controversial problems in the interrelation between orthodontics and periodontics is the decision-making that affects teeth with gum recessions before orthodontic treatment. There are often doubts as to whether it is better to perform the gingival tissue augmentation surgical procedure before or after orthodontic treatment. The answer to this question means considering numerous factors before taking the decision. There must be adequate case planning between the orthodontist and the periodontist, analysing both the type of dental movement that we want to perform on the recessed tooth, and factors related to gum characteristics and tooth or root morphology. After analysing the literature and the clinical assessment of patients, a protocol of action is presented for decision-making with interdisciplinary patients.
